In the Brazil's northeastern region men and women organized groups of wanderers took up arms and started to looting and raiding villages and plantations. Specialists in reconnaissance and survival in the Brazilian Serrado, the Cangaceiros have become a fearsome force in Brazil. Without forming a single unit, these groups are used either by the local agrarian elite for internal disputes or as a form of uprising against these same elites. The Cangaceiros divide opinion in the country's imagination, for some they are just bandits and looters, for others, symbols of resistance against the oppression of the poorest.
